I just discovered the fascination of the flats this past year (as I write these words Derwyn just lay in a little ambient riff in B flat before leaving) but since I'm not a pianist I do little with them. When on guitar I therefore always have to back myself up and count up the scale to decipher which note we're on, so the process becomes cumbersome. I try not to think because thinking gets in the way, and I stay in first position because when you start moving away from first position you're moving away from the purity of rock and roll. I remember noticing that the root note of an A major bar chord was the same as the open A string. And the root of the G chord matched up with the G string.
